Research Interest
My research focuses on neural regeneration processes in the adult nervous system. In this regard we primarily investigate determination, differentiation and maturation of myelinating glial cells. These cells, oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS) and Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS), produce myelin sheaths which enable saltatory nerve conduction and thereby accelerate and intensify neuronal communication. These cells and their myelin sheaths are very sensitive to deleterious exogenous factors and are therefore involved in a number of degenerating diseases such as multiple sclerosis or peripheral neuropathies. We have identified novel stimulatory and inhibitory molecular regulators involved in progenitor and stem cell differentiation and currently investigate their involvement in pathological and regenerative processes.
